Foodie Swellness: Hangover cure

mojito

Those pitchers of mojitos might’ve seemed like a good idea at the time. And now you’ve got a wicked hangover. Well, there’s now a meal that’s been scientifically proven to help you feel better.

Yakamein soup — a dish that typically includes beef, noodles, a boiled egg, and green onions in a beef broth) — boasts carbs and protein to get you feeling yourself again. Plus, the eggs are key — they contain cysteine, an amino acid that helps remove acetyldehyde from your body. The findings were presented this week be researchers from New Orleans at the National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society. The soup actually originates from New Orleans and is often called “old sober.”

Want to try this remedy out? Here’s a yakamein soup recipe I found from Deep South Dish. I think it sounds like a tasty meal on its own (perfect for warming up during this very non-spring-like week we’ve been having!).

Foodie Swellness: Bring it on down to Veganville

SNL on NBC Veggies22

The most compelling argument I’ve heard for going vegan :)

“Brown rice, baby, unmilled, unmilled…”

(Watch it on nbc.com if you can — unfortunately, we can’t view it up here in Canadaland…oh, wait — we can view this Dailymotion clip of it!)

Foodie Swellness: PS by Pretty Sweet

PS by Pretty Sweet counter

What: PS by Pretty Sweet

Where: 848 King St. W.

Atmosphere: White and airy with girly touches (pink logo, chandeliers, floral plates, etc.) but warm and welcoming, too — owner Adjoa Duncan makes you feel right at home.

PS by Pretty Sweet

Go here if: You want cheesecake in a mason jar. So you could technically just have a bite and leave the rest of the jar for later. Hahahah, who’s kidding who? Who will be able not to devour the whole jar?! There’s some seating up front if you want to have your coffee and baked treat ASAP, too, btw.

What to order: I’ve only had the vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting so far, and it immediately filled me with fear. Why fear? Because it was beyond tasty and PS is on a route I walk regularly and it’ll be mighty tempting to pop in for a treat ALL. THE. TIME. In fact, I may need to figure out a way to adjust my Nike Fuelband because the Fuel I earn walking isn’t exactly valid if I’m inhaling Pretty Sweet goods as I do it.

Besides cupcakes, there are plenty of other things I want to sample such as the vanilla bean cake with white chocolate and cream cheese buttercream.
